What Makes a Leader?
One important thing that effective leaders have is a high degree of emotional intelligence. There are five components of emotional intelligence at work environment. The firs component is self-awareness which is the ability to recognize and understand a person's moods, emotions, and drives, as well as their effects on others. Self-awareness extends a person in understanding his or her own values and goals. A person with high self-awareness can speak accurately and openly, he or she will able to admit failure. The second component is self-regulation which is the ability to control or redirect disruptive impulses and moods. They are able to create trust and fairness environment. Every changing situation is faced calmly by people who have mastered their emotions. Third is motivation; a passion to work for reasons that go beyond money or status. They pursue their goals with energy and persistence. Those characteristics can make working environment becomes better and better as in progressive tracking. Empathy, as fourth component, is the most easily recognized. It is the ability to understand the emotional makeup of other people. In other words, it is a skill to treat people according to their emotional reactions. Empathy plays a key role in the retention of talent. Leaders need empathy to develop and keep good people. The last component is social skill which is proficiency in managing relationships and building networks. It is very effective in leading change, persuasive, and expertise in building and leading team. Social skill allows leaders to put their emotional intelligence to work. In conclusion, emotional intelligence needs to have commitment and the process takes time to be learned.
